Week 1: Introduction

Hello everyone, my name is Daniella Sanchez and I’m a transfer English student from Imperial Valley College. My plan is to apply to the teaching credential program once I acquire my B.A next year. I commute everyday from Calexico to SDSU, it’s tough work but I manage. I was intrigued with this class when I first read the reviews in “rate my professor” on how there is a huge focus on mermaids and it’s effect on society, I was hooked. This feeling of curiosity grew once I stepped foot in class. Mermaids had always been a fairytale for me, however, after hearing everyone’s take on mermaids throughout different points of history my gears began to turn. I’m eager to be in this class and learn more about mermaids/mermen and their position/purpose in society.

Week 1 Introduction

Hello everybody! My name is Richie, and this is my first year attending San Diego State after transferring from community college in the area. I was born and raised in North County near Encinitas and Carlsbad, and I spent most of my time as a kid outdoors playing baseball or at the beach, which has led me to my passion for environmental sciences and my major, sustainability, because I would like to preserve our resources in order to allow future generations to have the same sorts of experiences that I was able to growing up. I recently adopted a kitten, my first pet, her name is Rosie and she is 5 months old and spending time with her has been my number one hobby lately. I was a little skeptical about the whole mermaid thing after the first day, however I loved the first classes and readings and I’m looking forward to a great semester with everyone and excited to have a passionate professor to teach the subject matter. Ya’ll can reach out whenever I’m always happy to meet new people!

Week One: Introduction

Hi everyone! My name is Elise and I am a second-year Marketing major. I’m from Pennsylvania so I am really grateful to be studying in San Diego. I love spending time outside so San Diego’s weather has been extremely refreshing. Whenever I have free time, I love to bring a book to the beach and read. My time spent reading by the water is what initially sparked my interest in this class. I was unaware that our discussions would focus on mermaids, but I am eager to learn more. I have always found mermaids extremely fascinating but was never given the opportunity to explore this phenomenon. Overall I am extremely excited for this upcoming semester!

Introduction

Hello class! My name is Jonah and this is my first year at SDSU. I transferred from Southwestern Community College and am studying Information Systems. I was born and raised here in San Diego, so if anyone needs recommendations on good restaurants, bars, clubs, etc. feel free to reach out. My hobbies are traveling, trying new things (especially food), and hitting the gym. A fun fact about me is I have 9 pets, no cats thankfully, and have a soft spot for animals, though not soft enough to turn vegetarian. When I found out this class was about mermaids I thought, “What did I get myself in to?”, but now I think it’s something new and interesting to learn. I’m looking forward to working with you all!

Introduction

Hello, everyone! My name is Ana, I am an English major, and I am a transfer student from Southwestern College. I’m technically in my junior year here at SDSU, but this is my second semester here. I was born in the Philippines but moved to San Diego with my family when I was 10 years old. I live in the South Bay area of San Diego, super close to the city of Imperial Beach, so it’s quite a commute from there to this campus.

Because I’ve never lived in a place where a beach wasn’t too far away, mermaids had (and will always have) my heart since I was a kid (can you guess what my favorite Disney movie was and still is?). Since hearing about this class, I practically jumped at the opportunity to take it. Mermaids and literature? That’s two of my favorite things in the world! Can you tell I’m excited to take this class and see what the semester brings?

introduction

My name is Karina Garcia and I’m a social work major. I decided coming in SDSU that I was going to pursue a degree in that field since I’ve been interested in the many different topics that go within one field but also the sense of urgency I have to help people in any way I possibly can. I thought the title of the class was interesting while I was deciding to enroll in it but now knowing that it is more of a focus on mermaids it has caught my attention as I have always questioned if mermaids and other creatures existed outside of the “mythical creatures” category.

I am originally born and raised in a city outside of Los Angeles and moved to San Diego right before I started high school and have been here ever since. I’m currently a full time student and also work at a car dealership. Outside of both school and work I enjoy spending most of my time with my dog, listening to music or spending time with my family.

Introduction

My name is Rigo De Leon, I am a transfer (junior) here at San Diego State, and I am originally from the Bay Area. I am an economics major, but I love reading and writing as well. Economics was not something I initially wanted to major in, but once I started taking economics classes, I was very happy I ended up with that. Even though I like reading and writing, it is something I only really do when I have to. This is why I am taking this class, but I am working on getting into the habit of reading and writing more on my own. I have only been in San Diego for a few months, but I am loving it so far.

Back in the Bay, I was working full time. Since I have arrived, I have not needed to find a job just yet, which has given me a lot of time for my hobbies. I like making and listening to music, training, cooking, and exploring. My main goals for this semester are landing an internship for the summer and reading at least 2 books a month. I look forward to meeting you all!

Introduction

Hi! My name is Naomi and it is my third year here at San Diego State. My major is sustainability, and so far I have enjoyed almost all my classes. I took this class because I saw the description of the course and was immediately intrigued! Mainly all my classes so far have revolved the environment in some type of way, so when I saw this one available I thought it was the perfect chance to try something somewhat out of my comfort zone and learn something new.

Outside of school, I like to go to the gym and the beach. I love swimming in the ocean and just hanging around the water. This summer I would love to get my scuba diving certification. After graduating I would love nothing more than to work in ocean conservation, the details of my plan are not yet finalized, but I’m excited to be in this class and continue my education!

Introduction

Hi! My name is Sierra and I’m a sophomore. I am a psychology major with a minor in statistics and I am not really sure what I want to do with my degree. My major is pretty unrelated to the subject of this class but I found the description of this fascinating! l was interested in how literature and the environment would intersect, but now I’m interested in learning about mermaids!

I’m from southern California, so I love to be outside. Some of my favorite activities to do are going to the beach with my friends, visiting flea markets, hiking, and reading. I love reading any type of literature, so I’m very interested in reading the myths about mermaids. I am excited about this semester and getting to know everyone!

Introduction

Hi, I’m Giselle and I’m pretty stoked to take this class! I had a few expectations going into this semester but the first class we had together last Thursday really blew my mind! The reading material is very interesting and I’m excited for whatever we’ll be learning about.

I’m a junior, this is technically my third year in college even though if we were really counting, it’s my fourth. I did three years at community college before transferring over to SDSU last fall. I’m a San Diego native, and I’ll probably stay here for awhile longer. I’m an English major, and I really do enjoy reading and sometimes writing, even though I don’t really have the time to do much of either 🙁
